Turkish authorities told when ground operation in Syria may start

Erdogan’s spokesman: Turkey’s ground operation in Syria can start at any moment

Turkey can start a ground military operation in northern Syria at any time, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Saturday.

“A ground operation is possible at any moment, given the level of threats we receive,” the Hurriyet newspaper quoted Calyn as saying.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in December that Turkey was holding talks with Russia on the use of northern Syrian airspace for an operation against the country’s banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkey has been conducting an air operation against the Syrian wing of the country’s banned PKK in northern Syria since Nov. 20 – strikes were reported in the city of Kobani, as well as in northern Iraq. Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan called the operation a success and did not rule out a ground operation to follow.
